The Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim was designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood in a rustic Parkitecture style, utilizing native stone and local timber to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. The original lodge opened in 1928 but was destroyed by fire in 1932. It was subsequently rebuilt and reopened by 1937, largely adhering to Underwood's original design, establishing it as a prime example of National Park service architecture from that era.
