Hodeida Yemen S.M. Ayesha Von Mücke Emden Navy 1915 Real Photo Postcard
This postcard illustrates a pivotal moment in the extraordinary World War I saga of Kapitänleutnant Hellmuth von Mücke and the surviving crew of the German light cruiser SMS Emden. After the Emden was crippled by HMAS Sydney in November 1914 off the Cocos Islands, Mücke led a landing party that subsequently seized the three-masted schooner Ayesha. This acquisition marked the beginning of their audacious journey to evade Allied forces and return to Germany.

On February 4, 1915, the Ayesha successfully landed Mücke and his 50 men in Hodeida, a strategically important port city in the Ottoman-controlled Yemen. This arrival signified a crucial step in their escape, as the Ottoman Empire was a German ally, offering safe haven and a potential route through the Arabian Peninsula. Their subsequent overland and sea journey through various Allied blockades became a highly celebrated tale of naval daring and perseverance, eventually seeing them reach Germany in May 1915.
