The Springfield Race Riot of August 1908 involved a white mob attacking the African American community and its businesses in Springfield, Illinois. Triggered by false accusations against Black men, the violence lasted for several days, resulting in widespread destruction, lynchings, and the displacement of thousands of Black residents. This pivotal event dispelled the myth that such racial violence was confined to the American South.

Scott Burton's Barber Shop, as seen in this image reflecting its destroyed state, was among the many African American-owned establishments targeted during the riot. The systematic demolition of Black businesses and homes aimed to dismantle the economic base and presence of Black residents in Springfield. The severity of the destruction and loss of life contributed significantly to the national outcry that led to the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
